Mangalore Tile Roofing

 Mangalore Tile Roofing

Mangalore tile roofing is a traditional sloped roofing system widely used in coastal and high rainfall regions of India. Originating from Mangaluru, these tiles are made of burnt clay, known for durability, thermal insulation, and aesthetic appeal. The interlocking pattern of tiles ensures proper water drainage and protection against heavy rain. This roofing system is commonly supported on timber frameworks and is suitable for residential and heritage-style buildings.

Step-by-Step Installation Process

1. Fixing the Timber Sheathing

Timber rafters or trusses are first installed to form the roof framework. Over this, timber sheathing (planks or boards) is fixed securely to provide a base for further layers.

2. APP Membrane Underlayment (Waterproofing)

An APP (Atactic Polypropylene) membrane is laid over the timber sheathing. This acts as a waterproof barrier, preventing leakage and protecting the structure from moisture.

3. Fixing the Battens

Wooden battens are fixed horizontally over the membrane at regular intervals. These battens support and hold the tiles in position.

4. Fixing the Mangalore Tiles

Mangalore tiles are placed from the eaves upward in an interlocking manner. Each tile overlaps the one below, ensuring proper water runoff and stability.

5. Fixing the Ridge Tiles

Ridge tiles are installed at the topmost part of the roof (ridge line). They are fixed using mortar or mechanical fasteners to seal the joint and prevent water entry.
