Crystalline Waterproofing

WHAT IS CRYSTALLINE WATERPROOFING?

Concrete is a porous material, and it absorbs water, which can cause cracks, that can become breeding grounds for waterborne contaminants, that can ultimately lead to structural deterioration.

So if you want to protect your concrete structures and ensure a long life, then waterproofing is essential. And one of the best methods is crystalline waterproofing.

Crystalline waterproofing is a type of waterproofing that uses crystalline technology to prevent water penetration in concrete structures. This technology works by using chemicals to create a crystalline structure; a network of insoluble, microscopic crystals within the concrete.

Crystalline waterproofing can be used in two way

First is over the existing structure surface &

Second is integral part of constructing a new structure

Now let understand, how to know when to apply existing surface & when to apply a new constructing structure

A - Existing structure surface crystalline waterproofing application should be used when:

1. Waterproofing an existing structure: If you need to waterproof an already-built concrete structure, applying a crystalline waterproofing coating or sealer is the best option,

2. You require a cost-effective solution: Topical waterproofing is usually more affordable than integral waterproofing.

3. You need a fast application: Existing structure surface waterproofing can be applied relatively quickly,

4. It can be also use over negative & positive side: it cover the negative and positive side of the structure surface

B - Integrally adding crystalline waterproofing application should be used when

1. Constructing a new structure: Adding crystalline waterproofing to the concrete mix during construction ensures that the entire structure is protected from water ingress.

2. You require a durable and permanent solution: Integral waterproofing provides a more durable, long-lasting solution than existing structure waterproofing,

3. Waterproofing in hard-to-reach areas: Integrally adding waterproofing to the mix ensures that even inaccessible or difficult-to-reach areas are protected.

4. Constructing a structure exposed to harsh conditions: Integral waterproofing is ideal for structures that will be exposed to extreme weather, chemicals, or abrasion, as it offers superior protection compared to topical waterproofing.

 Features of crystalline waterproofing

1. Protects reinforcing steel against corrosion.

2. Waterproofs minor cracking & seals shrinkage cracks up to 0.4 mm width.

3. Its waterproofing capability increases with time. I.e. it remains permanently active.

4. Can be applied to positive or negative side of concrete.

5. Easy in application, only mix water at site.

6. Protects concrete against contaminated water & corrosion.

7. Applicable on moist substrates.

Main Benefits of the Crystalline Waterproofing Treatment

1. Increases Durability

Using crystalline concrete technology can seal the pores in the concrete surface by triggering the formation of insoluble crystals that are resistant to physical damage. As a result, the structure’s durability increases using the crystalline waterproofing method.

2. Versatile Application

The crystalline waterproofing technology is highly versatile, reliable, and useful for a wide range of applications such as slurry, an admixture, or a dry sprinkle.

3. Absence of VOCs

Crystalline waterproofing chemicals do not contain any volatile organic compound (VOC). They can be completely recycled after demolition, and no membrane separation is required from the concrete.

4. Easy Installation

Crystalline technology ensures simple installation Thus, this method greatly reduces manpower and shortens the construction schedule

5. Saves Cost

Due to the simple installation procedures, the crystalline waterproofing method reduces the cost by reducing the construction time, and manpower requirement

6. Negative & positive side Application: It can be also use over negative & positive side of existing structure of the surface

Crystalline waterproofing can be applied in different method

Now let check the one by one

A - FIRST METHOD OF APPLICATION IS DRY SHAKE APPLICATION

It can be applied on fresh concrete floors, slabs and horizontal surfaces, after fresh concrete is placed, consolidated and levelled,

First, Wait until concrete hard enough to walk on, and Concrete should be free from bleeding water.

Recommend to broadcast as two application,

First 50% in one direction, and last 50% at the right angle.

B - SECOND METHOD OF APPLICATION IS OVER EXISTING CONCRETE SURFACE

1. Surface preparation for existing concrete Surface, it should be sound, clean and free from dirt, laitance, loose particles, paints, etc.,

2. Remove all protrusions, Chisel out honeycombed/damaged areas, repair the cracks and work back to sound concrete.

3. All crack and holes should be filled with crystalline waterproofing

4. Apply mixed of crystalline waterproofing with a trowel or brush,

5. Apply a second coat after 3 to 6 hours. At the right angles of the first coat.
