1. Inspect the Damage

  • Purpose: Identify the type, size, and extent of the damage (cracks, holes, spalling, etc.).
  • Look for: Structural cracks, surface flaking, water damage, or signs of underlying issues like soil movement.
  • Tools: Flashlight, crack width gauge, hammer (to check for hollow spots), and measuring tape.

 

2. Prepare the Area

  • Clean the damaged spot thoroughly. Remove dust, dirt, loose concrete, oil, paint, or any debris.
  • Tools you may need: Wire brush, hammer & chisel (for breaking loose concrete), power washer, or vacuum.
  • Tip: Edges of the repair area should be rough and squared off (not feathered) to help the new material bond properly.

 

3. Choose the Right Repair Material

  • Options depend on the type and depth of the damage:
    • Cracks: Epoxy, polyurethane, or concrete crack filler.
    • Small patches: Premixed concrete patch or vinyl concrete patch.
    • Large repairs: Standard concrete mix or polymer-modified concrete.
  • Note: Make sure the material is compatible with your existing slab.

 

4. Maintain the Mix Ratio as Per Instructions

  • Importance: Correct water-to-material ratio is key to strength and durability.
  • Follow manufacturer’s guidelines carefully. Using too much water can weaken the repair.

 

5. Mix the Repair Material

  • Use a mixing bucket, trowel, or mixing paddle. For larger repairs, a concrete mixer might be needed.
  • Ensure a uniform consistency. Mix thoroughly until there are no lumps or dry patches.

 

6. Fill the Crack or Hole

  • Apply the repair mix into the prepared area.
    • For cracks: Use a caulking gun or trowel to force the material deep into the crack.
    • For holes or spalled areas: Pour or trowel the material in layers, compacting as you go.
  • Smooth and level the surface using a trowel or float.

 

7. Cure the Repair

  • Essential for strength and longevity.
  • Keep the repair moist for several days if required (depending on material).
    • Cover with plastic sheeting or damp burlap.
    • Use curing compounds if recommended.
  • Avoid heavy loads or foot traffic until fully cured (usually 24–72 hours, depending on product).
