WHICH IS THE BEST WATER PROOFING TREATMENT FOR THE TERRACE?

The structure serves as a protective barrier against various weather conditions like the sun, wind, and rain. Additionally, it provides security from unknown threats during the night. This is the reason why humans have developed the concept of home structures as a shield. For residents seeking a peaceful living environment, professionals in need of comfortable workspaces in commercial complexes, and industries searching for suitable locations.

Humans naturally seek protection from the elements such as wind, sun, and rain, as it is a crucial aspect of our lives. Therefore, humans have developed structures that are designed to provide this much-needed shelter.

Among all this roof is also important part of any structure whether it is for house, commercial complex, or it for factory or any plant

Hear terrace play important role in any structure which cover the top of the any structure without it cannot be completed

Terrace consists the 3 important component of structure

1. Parapet wall

2. Staircase Room

3. Lift duct

Water proofing method

In our present era, numerous techniques have been developed for waterproofing, encompassing both traditional and modern methods.

Some techniques have stood the test of time and remain popular among people. They have proven their effectiveness and are still widely used in various fields. Various techniques have been developed over time to meet the requirements of modern-day conditions and beyond.

Treatment for the terrace leakages

1. Brickbat coba

The brick bat Coba materials are laid on the flat roof surface at the thickness of 75mm to 150mm with the cement mortar mix of waterproofing chemicals at the proper slope to drain out the water in the rainy season. Also, to prevent water penetration.

Advantages of Brickbat Coba

·         It is old waterproofing method.

·         It is time tested & old trusted method High

·         Masonry brick wastages can be utilized for the waterproofing.

Disadvantages of Brickbat Coba

·         The main disadvantage of brickbat Coba is the dead load. It increases the dead weight of the structure when using bricks.

·         Immediate rectification required if any cracks have been found on the roof surface else, it may cause trouble in the future which may not be solved quickly.

2. Grouting / injection

Injection grouting is the method of filling the cracks, open joints, voids, or honeycombs, in concrete or masonry structural members. This is done under pressure with a grout material that cures in place to produce the desired results like strengthening a structure and preventing water ingress.

There are different types of grouts used for the repair and strengthening of concrete and masonry structural members.

3. Chemical water proofing

Waterproofing chemicals provide a protective barrier that prevents water penetration into the building envelope. They form a seal on surfaces, including concrete, masonry, and roofing systems, effectively keeping water out and safeguarding the structural elements from moisture-related damage.

Chemicals create a hydrophobic layer that repels water and prevents it from seeping into the building components. This added layer of protection reduces the risk of cracks, spalling, and corrosion, thus increasing the lifespan of the structure. Waterproofing chemicals act as a shield, safeguarding the building against the detrimental effects of water and moisture, even in extreme weather conditions.

4. Hessian based tar felt

Tar Felt is produced by saturating centre core of hessian with straight grade bitumen and coated with specially formulated bituminous compound on both sides. Thereafter, mica / sand is spread over bituminous surface to prevent inter layer sticking of felt during rolling and longevity during storage.

Advantages

• Economical

• Good dimensional stability under tension

 • Excellent resistance to positive water and vapour pressure

• Totally impermeable

• Flexibility to adopt all types of contours

5. App membrane water proofing

APP stands for Atactic Polypropylene. APP membrane is the most commonly used waterproofing material on concrete roofs and low-slope roofs. APP membrane is applied to asphalts with a torch. Applications of APP membranes aren’t limited to just roofs. Manmade ponds, bathrooms, water tanks, curtain walls, concrete channels can be protected against water ingress with APP waterproofing membrane. APP membrane is a durable waterproofing material largely preferred by contractors for safeguarding surfaces against leakage.

5. Crack filling

As the name suggests, the crack developed is treated in desired way. Here the crack is firstly cut in a V-grove with help of marble cutter. The crack is cut in V grove by tilting the marble cutter at an angle. This grooving is done so that the waterproofing chemical settles in thus waterproofing the crack. The cut given is approximately 5mm- 6mm.

Followed by cutting, primer is applied. This primer also called as grout is low viscous grout once poured, easily settles in the cracks.
